What is a Spiritual Experience (SE)?

Spirituality and/or Mystical Experiences describes the relationship between the person and a transcendent being or force or a higher being; it is a quality that goes beyond a specific religious affiliation. Examples include mystical and near-death experiences.

Definitions vary considerably ranging from Neumann's (1964) "upheaval of the total personality" to Greeley's (1974) "a spiritual force that seems to lift you out of yourself."

A mystical or spiritual experience will be reported to you with these words:

I don't have the words to explain this to you and...
You're going to think I'm CRAZY if I tell you this, but...

Then they go on to explain what type of experience they have had.

Different Types of Spiritual Experiences are:

    • Meaningful Coincidences and/or Synchronicities
    • Mystical Experiences
    • Kundalini Awakening
    • Near-Death Experiences
    • Awakening of Intuitive Abilities
    • Emergence of Past Life Memories
    • Shamanic Initiatory Crisis
    • Communications with Spirit Guides/Angels
    • Channeling
    • Encounters with UFOs
    • Possession States

Problems Resulting from Having a SE are:

    • Difficulty reconciling attitudinal changes with the expectations of family & friends
    • A sense of isolation
    • A fear of ridicule or rejection from others
    • Difficulty communicating the meaning and impact of the SE
    • Difficulty maintaining previous life roles that no longer carry the same significance (Turner, 1992-1994)

These common interpersonal problems only exacerbate the characteristics resulting from living in an alcoholic or dysfunctional home if those characteristics have not been addressed prior to the SE.

Generally, after working in therapy to become educated about characteristics from living in a dysfunctional home and/or from having a SE, people report:

    • “An increased appreciation for life, self-acceptance, concern for others and a sense of purpose
    • Decreased concern for personal status and material possessions; and
    • An overall shift toward universalistic spiritual values regardless of previous religious affiliations or lack thereof  (Ring (1984))

Normal & Expected Reactions to Mystical and/or SE are:

    • Anger
    • Depression
    • Interpersonal difficulties
    • Fear of mental instability
    • A sense of isolation
    • Difficulty communicating the meaning and impact of the experience
    • Previous life roles no longer carry the same significance
